BEHIND THE FIND 🕵️‍♀️

I grabbed these becuase they looked like cheerful little vintage kitchen prints.

Then I noticed the Morton Salt branding and went down the rabbit hole.

Here’s what made them so interesting...

@mortonsalt had a pretty basic problem: salt is cheap, everyone already has it, and people only need so much.

So instead of simply telling people to buy more salt, they found a smarter way to sell it. They started giving people more reasons to use it.

Morton tied salt to seasonal foods and positioned it as something that could make fresh food taste better.

So those sweet little pictures are actually behavioral advertising.

They weren't just saying, "Look how pretty tomatoes are"

They were like, "You know that tomato you already eat? It needs Morton Salt."
That corn, Morton.
That watermelon? Morton.
Grapefruit? Yep, Morton too.

And grapefruit has its own story. During WWII, when sugar was rationed, Morton promoted adding salt to grapefruit because it cut the bitterness and made it taste sweeter, meaning people could use less sugar. The idea stuck, and Morton kept promoting it into the 1950s.

Then came the melons.

By 1954, Harriet and Bernard Pertchik’s artwork was running with the line: “Any melon worth its salt… is worth Morton’s.”

They didn't stop there, there was another clever layer. Some versions of the ads apparently allowed consumers to mail in 25¢ and receive the artwork without the advertising copy, turning an advertisement into something you'd literally frame and hang in your kitchen.

So yes, they’re charming little vintage prints. But they’re also a pretty brilliant piece of mid-century advertising!

Classic cobalt blue and rust-red fishnet pattern; both jars still features their original vintage Higbee’s department store tags on the base! $35 and $25, which in today’s term would be around $400!

🖋️Mid-Century French Porcelain Inkwell — $55
The most delicate petite desk piece with hand-painted floral panels, built-in pen rests, and original export marks. Basically a tiny jewel for a coffee table or bedside!

🎏 Hand-Painted Limoges Fish Plate - $75

French Limoges porcelain with a beautifully hand-painted fish and wonderfully soft, almost watercolor-like background. Artist signed and one of those pieces that is quirky in the best possible way!

💙19th C. Blue Transferware Pitcher - $150
Antique English cobalt floral pitcher showcasing rich, authentic crazing and a beautiful time worn patina.

Behind the Find 🕵️

I almost passed on this one because it’s not the glam silver ice buckets I usually look for.

But I loved the patina, the hammered finish and of course the lion’s-head ring pulls. So into the car it went.

Once I got it home, I found the weathered away maker’s mark: Chas J. ——something —— Brooklyn, N.Y.

Of course this sent me down the rabbit hole. A few false flags, but eventually, I figured it out.

Charles J. Hauck & Son - Brooklyn, NY

In the late 1800s, Charles J. Hauck & Son was known as a Brooklyn manufacturer of bar supplies. The Hauck family was developing some of the tools that helped shape American cocktail culture.

In 1884, Charles Hauck’s son Edward patented a shaker for mixing drinks, complete with an integrated strainer and venting system. A few years later, Charles J. Hauck Jr. patented his own bar strainer and an “agitator of liquids.”

So this little bucket came from a family business that was making and inventing barware during the very era when cocktail culture in America was taking shape.

🪄 It’s these stories that make me love what I do so much.

Every. Single. Piece. Gets researched.

Sometimes I find exactly what I thought I found. Sometimes I find out I was very wrong. And sometimes I uncover a story that makes the piece so much more interesting.

We don’t usually travel this time of year because Cleveland is so wonderful in the summer, but my son begged to go on vacation. Jeff has traveled non-stop for work this year, and my boys aced their freshman year in college.

As for me, since I opened the store in October, I have been running myself absolutely ragged.

I still stage homes, sell real estate, and source non stop. After doing two markets last weekend and promptly getting sick yet again, I realized that I need to slow down. How I’m going to do that is TBD but for this week, I’m so grateful to have this opportunity to rest and spend quality time with my family! 🫶
